Basics of Breath

Spirit of a Yogi

“Go to your breath”

“Focus on your breath/ing.”

These are two of the most common phrases any student will hear during a yoga class, but what does it mean? For many yogis of all levels, this is sometimes the most confusing, the hardest, and elusive part of the practice. One thing to remember: Yoga goes beyond the asana/posture. Though media fills people’s minds of thin women doing advanced postures, the core of yoga is not asana.

It is the breath.

It is the moment in between moments that brings the focus of the mind in towards meditation. Towards the ability to strengthen and discipline the mind. To be completely present throughout each minute of the day. This takes practice, which starts with…you got it, the breath.

The way in which the yogi breathes is balanced. What does this mean? It means that the breathe flows freely through both nostrils, fully…

Yoga At Home and In A Group

Now we agree with a lot of what was said in this link about yoga.  We’ve been trying our best to practice more of the poses, looking at various posts we find online.  We are discovering it is hard to keep track of the movements when we can’t see the screen well enough from the position we are in.

Aha, most yoga studios have mirrors in them for that very purpose.  Although I do agree that isn’t where most of us are looking, we are trying to follow the instructor to the best of our ability.  We think there is tremendous value in doing many of our yoga stretches at home in the safety and security of our own space until we get the basics down a bit.

Or take a long some really supportive friends that won’t laugh their heads off or criticize us any more than we are already doing to ourselves for the unusual ways we are trying to twist ourselves.

Yes, we hear it when they are calling out especially at our age.  Really though the older we get the more we do need to stay limber and be able to still move our bodies from head to toe and side to side.  We often forget how much our necks like to be stretched even if we don’t sit at a desk all day.  Driving puts tremendous stress on our neck and shoulders.

Yoga has so many positive benefits, now we never stayed with it long enough to become masters at it, though we’ve been told it’s never too late.  Our bodies are not in that limber enough state yet to fully agree with that.  We need to work out all the movements much better than we have been and be much more consistent than we have been.

For us that is the number one reason why we do show up at a class every once in a while, if we don’t pretty soon, before you know it, we’ve missed a whole week of yoga stretching until our body is screaming at us.  Oops, sorry beautiful wanna be body.  Scheduling one class a week, or month, or something will keep us on track with that.

Most of all this interesting link about yoga practice in a studio inspired us to get busy taking better care of ourselves.  May you too get up and move and find an easy to do daily way to help your body begin and end each day with as many relaxed muscles and state of mind as possible.

There is something to the message of  “just do it”, as I sit here stretching my neck.  We say we are multitasking that way, to a degree, yes.  What I am finding out best is how important it has become to notice our bodies enough to take care of them in a healthy way.

As I write more pictures and related posts pop up with an ever-growing array of yoga choices.  Now, that in itself gets my mind quite excited.
“Oh boy, look at all these new ways of learning and doing yoga.”

Learning about it, not enough, there it is again, the reminder to start doing.  So, in the need of a well deserved break, I stop now from reading and writing the ideas down, to actually trying some of the stretches once again so that they become second nature and not a kick in the pants reminder.

6 reasons I don’t want to practice yoga in a studio.

Earth Friendly Sink?

road to white castles

“The gifts that make us dig out, and, figure out;

Who we are, what we’re made for, and,

what we’re responsible for giving back to life.”

Tony Robbins

Yes, I am trying to make peace with her right now.  Having problems with the kitchen sink not draining.  Worrying about it way too much, starting to get angry that it’s not working properly.  Silly me, I am not a plumber, so stop blaming myself that it is still plugged up.

That led to looking for another solution.  For us that is turning on the HGTV shows to see how they rebuild and reorganize stuff.  My frustration grew.  Suddenly it dawned on me, I wasn’t watching anything about what to do with a plugged up sink, only total remodel which isn’t going to happen around here.

Mother Nature keeps calling me outside to seek a solution there.  To be thankful for what I do have.  A bucket under the outside hose that always leaks so I can water my beautiful flowers guilt free.  An abundance of blackberries already ripe on the vine.  So easy to focus on other things I do have instead of what I don’t.

We at least do have running water and two bathrooms that work that dishes can be done in with a little creativity.  When I thought of how the shows did help my line of thought, I imagined actually getting a new sink put in.  Well, since I know that means they’d have to tear everything existing out, sink, counter, plumbing pipes, hoses, dishwasher.  Yeah, my kitchen, a total mess, no working sink then either.

So where else could this growing amount of dishes be cleaned at?  Yes, outside in a couple of little plastic buckets just waiting for something to do.  Where would the hot water come from.  The kitchen is off limits, remember?  One bathroom has a better hot water faucet and an adequate counter to set up my cleaning dishes production.

To think all that stomach churning and knots in my shoulders could be melted away just by doing this good enough solution, amazing.

Of course, I am still hoping and praying that the new found “guaranteed” drain clog solution will clear my kitchen sink enough to use it again to do my dishes.  Suggestions have been made to turn the cold water valve and hot water valves back on in the drains that were dripping.  Won’t hurt to try.  That all started with our wanting to care for Mother Earth in such a way that we weren’t wasting  so much water.  Ours is on the low end of the usage scale, still…..I took on this challenge to see if without repairs we could lower how much water we used.

Maybe a little, I am beginning to believe it is causing more problems than not, running from room to room for the hot water that doesn’t work here, to the cold water that tastes better there, to a kitchen sink that doesn’t drain.

Oh and of course when the water went through a brown stage one day I wondered about the ability to continue doing 3 loads of laundry in one day.

Yet again as long as we do our best not to waste it, whatever that means is between us and Mother Nature, and all the creatures who share our same needs for water, clean, pure, abundant and healthy.  May all that I have today last us the rest of our days in a useful way where our hearts can be glad to say “Sweet Mother Earth, we are doing the best we can to care for you, we hear you Mother Earth and will try to do these things you have whispered to us.  Thank you for water in our house.”

“Nature has her own way of doing things.  She knows the heart of the matter.

Heart felt gifts describe a day spent in wondering of her depth of splendor.

Lovingly, she continues to survive regardless of the abuse we’ve carved upon her.”

In The Silence of Mind

You are always there waiting for me. To guide, to console. To say, don’t worry, just go. Get about the day. I find you as a comfort and a muse. Dinner time, no way, I have got to get some of my work done.
It is always late when I delay. Get back to dinner now, no, I found my muse for the day.

This silent mind is a lie.  No quiet spot will we ever find.  Put it down on paper, they say.  Tell your friends, and journal.  No way.  Start a blog, just for today.  Does that make it silent?  No way.
Don’t even go there, today is not in vain. You paid attention, finding the perfect selection, maybe yes, got lost in perfection. Went outside, forget about shopping. Took some pictures, the day is not done.

Did nothing wrong, caught up on email, to no avail.   Yep these are just ideas, quit wasting time.  We must get busy to make that dime.  The mind isn’t silent and drolls along, because you just keep singing and dancing without knowing the song.  Quit taking so long.  Now try.  Right now, you’ve got more than one page.

Pick a theme here or there?  Didn’t the directions say, it could just load it the way it is?  Then change it!

Try before the power is gone, cause then you will be crying all day long, that you waited again.

Sometimes emptying the mind onto the page, doesn’t make it silent, but it does stop its rage.

Believe them when they say, I am fine, I am okay.  We have, they keep getting sicker anyway.  Can we repair the aura by how our bodies fell?  Putting ourselves back together is a mind thing.  Front to back, back to front now, no longer from side to side, yet include up and down.

Yes, all around us in a circle the mind bided its time wondering what silence would mean if the body did its own work, if it was listened to as a gift.  As serving the world with its unique gifts and talents.  Listen with openness is what the body asks.  All these lessons are waiting to the path of perfect health.

Honor our body as the place where our soul resides, that too is a belief we need to take out of our minds so closer to silence it may become.  As we listen to our own inner intelligence can we honor our bodies as completely heaven made?  Yes, as we balance well-being with the gratitude of love for perfect health.  Our bodies our worthy of our care.  Listen to the brains of the heart as it helps us keep disease  of our body away as we invite more passion into our lives.

Much different passion than that of our minds which isn’t our most trustworthy guide.  Inner knowingness is, as our bodies continue to take care of us automatically most of the time, breathing, heart beating, waking and sleeping.

We can restore balance in our bodies with awareness.   How?  By creating  healthy habits that we feel happy about that sooth our mind.  Like a morning meditation of quite music, or a solitary walk in the sunshine.  Actively saying good morning to all of those parts of our bodies that were at rest and now must get moving.

We thank you heart and breath and all the inner wiring of ourselves that constantly keep running as we go into precious sleep allowing the muscles and bones, tendons and toes, to recuperate from a busy awake state.  We are learning that our outer world of body reflects our inner world of the mind.

“Music in the soul can be heard by the universe.”  Lao Tau

Greater harmony between body and mind leads to a happy calm space that makes worthwhile our existence.  How to obtain this bliss?  Try to become conscious of what would makes us feel that.  Fresh flowers blooming in a vase?  Scented candles burning about the place?  A clean work space?  Food cooking with a savor we can almost taste.

Even changing the spaces we dwell in.  No, we don’t have to move away unless we want to.  We can rearrange the furniture, get new pieces, clean them up a bit.  Put new pictures on the wall, listen to different music.  Change the view outside the windows putting up a bird feeder or two.  No this isn’t just women’s work, a man needs fresh plants growing in his environment too.  A clean window to look out of to keep nature in view.

“The perfect medicine for us is often blooming right outside our front doors.”

Nature in the skies above us ever-changing with the blowing wind.  The trees that bring us fruit and food a plenty.  Tending to a vegetable garden we ourselves have planted, satisfaction guaranteed.  The natural scents and spices that drift into our open windows from setting herbs in the sills.  These are some of the creature comforts that nourishes the brain into a quieter state of contentment and rest.  There is nothing selfish to having a peaceful life.

As we keep what our minds see outside of us positive with colorful art and music that soothes us, in that, our body heals itself when we listen to it.
